Phags-pa is a historical script created in the 13th century by the Tibetan scholar and monk Phags-pa Lama. It was developed during the Yuan Dynasty as an official script for the Mongol Empire, intended to write multiple languages including Mongolian, Tibetan, and Chinese. The script is an abugida, where each character represents a consonant with an inherent vowel sound that can be changed with diacritics. It was used primarily for administrative and religious purposes but fell out of use after the fall of the Yuan Dynasty. Phags-pa is known for its distinctive rounded and square shapes.
