CJK Unified Ideographs Extension J is a new Unicode block introduced in Unicode 17.0, which was officially released in September 2025. It is a part of the larger CJK Unified Ideographs set, which encodes characters used in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and historically, Vietnamese. This new extension adds over 4,000 new characters to the standard, many of which are rare or historical variants needed for specialized applications like scholarly work, ancient text databases, and historical documents. It is a continuation of the ongoing process of expanding the Unicode standard to fully accommodate the vast and complex Han character repertoire.
