Glagolitic Unicode Script
The earliest Slavic language that is still in use today is Glagolitic script. It is widely accepted that Saint Cyril, a monk from Thessalonica, invented it in the ninth century. In order to propagate Christianity among the local West Slavs, the Byzantine Emperor Michael III dispatched him and his brother Saint Methodius to Great Moravia in 863. The brothers resolved to translate liturgical books into a modern Slavic tongue that the general populace could comprehend. (now known as Old Church Slavonic). Cyril chose to create a new script, Glagolitic, based on the regional dialect of the Slavic tribes from the Byzantine theme of Thessalonica because the words of that language were difficult to write using either the Greek or Latin alphabets.
